Graphic of one side of the dog Dogs On The Delaware was a competition in 2006 by the town of Frenchtown, New Jersey, USA for New Jersey artists. The dogs were flat wood boards, two sided on a wood base. Not 3D sculptures like the horses, cows and moose on parade in other cities. There were three different dog silhoettes. I submitted a design for each of these. Artists could submit as many entries as they wanted. The deadline was June 2006.

There are many flowers in Frenctown, so I submitted a floral design for the leaping dog, “Floribunda”. The second design was for a little Scottie silhoette so I submitted a Celtic theme, based on photos I took in Scotland. The “collar” was The Callanish Standing Stone Circle from a photo I took there in July 2005. I named Scottie “Alba”. The third entry was a standing dog with a music theme. The dog was named “Allegro”.

I never heard anything so I threw out copies of my entries in January 2007. In June 2007 I got a call from the Frenchtown Business Association that the competition was revivied and one of my entries was picked.

Floribunda, the flower dog, was sponsored by NT Callaway, a realtor in New Hope, Pennsylvania, USA. I was able to get a copy of my submission.

I picked up the dog. It was far larger than life size. I gessoed the dog then drew out the design. I spent almost three solid weeks doing nothing but painting in acrylics, which are better suited for outdoor work than oil paint. The dog had to be done by Frenchtown's Bastille Day Celebration, July 14 and 15, 2007. All winning entries were on display on the streets of Hunterdon and Bucks Counties. I was paid $250 upon completing the dog and turning it in. All the dogs were auctioned off by silent auction on September 3, 2007. Any dogs that did not sell were auctioned off by public auction after September 3. The money went to charities.

Floribunda was the high seller. There was a bidding war for it. The high bid was $550 from Hannah Shipley of Erwinna, Pennsylvania. The dog is in private ownership. Hopefully, not outside on her lawn.

The money was donated to the Save An Animal Shelter in Princeton, New Jersey.

Here is the base of the dog. That is a mushroom that was growing under my oak tree at the time. The other side is a Monarch butterfly.

And, on the entry form,
where it said “Why do you want to enter this contest ?”
I wrote, “Because it looks like it's so doggone fun!”
