The Beacons Of Gondor Are Lit

from The Return Of The King

You are Pippin, a hobbit of almost four feet in height. You are sitting in front of Gandalf. Because you are so short, the head of the horse fills much of your view. His mane flows over your hands.

Wrapped in Gandalf's billowing and flowing cloak, the wind whistles past your ears as Shadowfax canters towards Gondor.

“There was silence again for a while. Then, ‘What is that?’ cried Pippin suddenly, clutching at Gandalf'cloak. ‘Look! Fire, red fire! Are there dragons in this land? Look, there is another!’”

“For answer Gandalf cried aloud to his horse. ‘On, Shadowfax! We must hasten. Time is short. See! The beacons of Gondor are alight, calling for aid. War is kindled. See, there is fire on Amon Dîn, and flame on Eilenach;...”

I based Shadowfax on a photo I took for a self portrait project in a photography class and from my own observations while on a moonlight trail ride on a very pale gray horse. They glow faintly in the dark. I used my own hands as models for the three hands in the drawing. Look carefully, but just out of my (Pippins) center of focus, I am clutching the cloak with my left hand.

This is an eighteen by twenty-four inch lead pencil drawing on Canson 55lb Bright White paper, medium tooth. It is framed under glass. The price is $1500. Shipping is extra.
